On New Year's Eve, 2024, we lost the godfather and elder statesman of our community - DJ Kulu. To commemorate, we are announcing that we are renaming our main stage to "The Kulu Stage" at all our future events. 


Inviting Kulu to play at our events was much more than just recognition of his ability on the decks (which, for a guy his age, continually surprised us). Inviting Kulu meant bringing a lifetime of experience, contribution, and understanding - particularly of the Hong Kong electronic scene of which we are proud members off.

 

Kulu already had his legendary status when we first invited him. It felt like we were 're-introducing' him to the community we were assembling, and in doing so, we changed how we saw Spin Sum ourselves. 

 

Such was his humility, and passion for music, that he

If that wasn't enough, his presence alone brought unlimited cool. Perhaps the most special moments were witnessing new people come to Spin Sum, having never heard of this guy, and then stand witness to a 78 year old, dressed like a grandmaster or spiritual leader, throw it down for hours, keep pace with people 50-60 years his junior. 

Hopefully, the facial expressions that we witnessed meant "Where on earth are we?!"

Kulu's presence reminded us that we are simply carrying the torch, one generation at a time. 

 

It always felt that we were unbelievably fortunate to be able to call upon these sorts of incredible characters to fill our line ups, and in doing create something different - an atmosphere that felt unique and special. 
 

Kulu's incredible synergy with DJ El Toro, and DJ Suiki created something quite unique. The site of these elder statesmen dropping bombs behind the decks, and engaging​
